To join the New Mexico Army National Guard, you have to go through the New Mexico national guard recruiting phases. Before you go to the Basic Combat Training (BCT), you have to face the Recruit Sustainment Program (RSP) that we offer. This program will keep you on track for the Basic Combat Training(BCT) and prepare you physically, mentally, and emotionally for your training program.
What are the physical requirements to join the national guard?
You must be between 17 and 35 years of age, but people with linguistics and professional skills might get an exception. You must be in the range of the specified height and weight. You should also pass an Army physical fitness test as well, which requires completing sit-ups, pushups, and a two-mile run in a given time. Finally, you undergo a physical exam under the supervision of a national guard doctor.
You have to meet the standard conditions where you shouldn’t have any physical defect or condition that requires extended treatment. You should not have any contagious diseases to endanger the health of the people around you. There are other requirements for senses and body build as well.
National guard primary recruitment phases
- Red Phase – Your first weekend at Recruit Sustainment Program (RSP), you will learn all the basics regarding the army structure, chain of command, general orders, rank and insignia, customs and courtesies, drill and ceremony, physical fitness, AKO & MyPay setup, and reporting procedures.
- White Phase – Along with the physical training, you will learn about the proper wear of the military uniform, army values, tactics, soldier’s creed, and warrior ethos, employ camouflage, cover, and concealment, and weapons familiarization.
- Blue Phase – You will learn about the final details that you should know before you go for BCT. This is the final drill where you learn about inspections, what every trainee wants to know about BCT, and the final preparations for BCT.
Split Training Option (STO) program
The split training option (STO) program is the Green phase of the New Mexico national guard recruiting process. To become a recruit of the STO program, you must join the national guard during your junior year of high school.
After completing the BCT program and during your senior year of high school, you will learn about advance leadership and career opportunities. You will learn skills like urban area operations, navigation techniques, disassembling, assembling, and performing a function check on various weapons, along with the convoy operations.
Becoming a national guard
After completion of BCT and Advanced Individual Training (AIT), you will return to the RSP for a final drill - the Battle Handoff. You will complete this drill before you join your regular unit. You will also learn about where and when your next drill will be.
